Picture South Perth

In the Federation of Australian Historical Societies e-Bulletin No. 126 - 28 June 2014 we have been alerted to a new  digital collection.

The City of South Perth recently launched a digital collection of historic images online; this project only went live a few short weeks ago and has been titled Picture South Perth. The website link to visit is: http://picture.southperth.wa.gov.au

Picture South Perth is an online collection of historic images dating back to the 1870s that showcases the people, places and events that have shaped the City of South Perth.

It contains photographs from the City of South Perth’s Local History Collection and artwork from the May and Herbert Gibbs Collection which has been scanned and catalogued by dedicated library staff.

Through Picture South Perth you can search, tag and comment on images. Key words such as people’s names, places and subjects can be clicked on to view more images that have been tagged with the same terms.

Share your images through Picture South Perth to preserve our cultural heritage.

Contact the City of South Perth Libraries on 9474-0800 or localhistory@southperth.wa.gov.au to arrange for your images to be scanned and returned to you.

Historical Photos on Flickr

Many museums, libraries and institutions share their collections of photographs on Flickr. These collections may be searched by keyword. Some of the photos are available for free download whilst others are subject to copyright restrictions. It is important to establish the copyright status of each image before using it.

Trove Tuesday - Miss Dunlop of Turramurra

As there are copyright restrictions on the Treasures from Trove found this morning an image of the resources found will not be pasted here.

Before copying photos from Trove or anywhere one should check on their copyright status.The Trove search this morning for Turramurra October returned two photographs from TV Times issue 6 October 1962. On checking this copyright notice was found:

The images are of Miss Dunlop, fiancee of Frank Partridge, VC, winner on Bob Dyer's television quiz program Pick-a-box preparing for her marriage at her parents' Turramurra house. Another photo with similar copyright restrictions shows Frank Partridge VC, BP Pick-a-Box champion and just married, with his nursing sister wife Barbara Dunlop, in their Turramurra house. The photo can be viewed online here : http://acms.sl.nsw.gov.au/item/itemDetailPaged.aspx?itemID=91228.

Sadly Frank and Barbara's marriage was short as Frank was killed in an accident in 1964.

"Picture This" at Ku-ring-gai

In recognition of this year's History Week theme "Picture This" we are posting some photos from the Ku-ring-gai area on our blog this week.

The following photos are from a collection donated to the Society. It is thought that they were taken near the West Pymble shops around 25 years ago. The collection is made up of photos of individual and groups of children sitting in a vintage red car with Queensland number plates, that appears to be an Alfa Romeo.

If you are able to help with details of the event, the cars or the children pictured please respond by making a comment on this blog post or by email to khs@khs.org.au. There are 75 photos in the collection; if you know that your children were photographed at this event please contact us so and we will arrange for you to view the remainder of the collection.

The Society has more than 10,000 images catalogued on its Perfect Pictures database. These imagaes can be accessed during opening hours in the Society rooms.

History Week 7 – 15 September 2013 – Picture This

The theme for the 16th annual History Week 2013 is Picture This.

The History Council of NSW website shares the rationale for this year's theme:

"Driving humanity; reflecting change; imagining reality. In the image conscious 21st Century photographs shape the world. How has the development of the visual changed, informed and sculpted society? How do historians use art and photography to inform their research? Who were the original mad men of the advertising industry? Who were our image makers? People have long manipulated their images and all cultures have created their view of the world through visual representations. History Week 2013 will bring the past into view through the frame of images."

There are numerous talks and exhibitions planned to celebrate this occasion. A visit to the History Week 2013 webpage provides details of many events.

Scanning Days at KHS

As a National Family Month activity at Ku-ring-gai Historical Society we have invited Society Members and members of the community to bring in photos of people and places in the community. We are keen to preserve photographs of the local area.

Volunteers are scanning the photos and giving back to those who bring them in a digital copy of the photos we have scanned. Today we have scanned photos under glass and photos encased in plastic. We will be having another scanning day on Friday 23 August.

If you have photos of events, homes or school activities in the area please consider joining us on Friday between 10:30 am and 1:30pm. We will scan your photos and, if you wish, give you a digital copy for your records.

Packed House

Yesterday's wet weather did not dampen the enthusiasm of the members who came out for the

Picasa workshop in the rooms yesterday. Our rooms were packed to capacity with those eager to hear abut Picasa from two member enthusiasts, Tony Prince and Jill Ball.

It appears that many of us share a love of photos but are at sea when faced with digitising, preserving, organising and editing our collections. Thank you to all who attended, Tony and I enjoyed showing you what we know. Your questions and comments made this an enjoyable collaborative session for us.

We were unable to cover many functions of the software in depth and on reflection gathered that members would be interested in a future session on using Picasa to apply minor fixes to old photos. We will schedule this as a topic for one of the meetings of the new Technology Special Interest Group that will be meeting in the rooms on the second Thursday of the month from 1:30pm - 3:00pm commencing on Thursday 12th September. Should you have a topic that you would like covered in one of these meetings please email me jillballau@gmail.com and we will endeavour to cover it.

We will be celebrating National Family History Month which kicks off this Thursday, August 1, at Ku-ring-gai Historical Society. The National Family History Month website has listings of events from all over the nation but also lists events in areas not far from Ku-ring-gai. Peruse the list and you may find something to suit your interests.

Visitors are always welcome at our General and Family History Group Meetings. Dates and times for these can be seen on our Calendar. For other events on the Calendar please contact the Society to see if there are vacancies.

Special events that have been organised for National Family History Month at our Society are two Scanning Days on  Monday 19 August and Friday 23 August from 10.30 am to 1.30 pm in the research rooms.

Please bring along your old Ku-ring-gai photos with a focus on “The people of Ku-ring-gai and where they lived”.

We’ll have a team of volunteers in the rooms to scan them for you.

You’ll get your precious photo(s) preserved in a digital format and at the same time make a contribution to the knowledge of the local area and its people.

You never know, the act of sharing might even lead to connections with other family members.

Bring a USB stick to take your high resolution images home with you.
