A member blogs his stories.

During Seniors' Week several members attended a blogging session in which I talked about how we could use blogs to tell our stories.

A wonderful example of a blog that tells ancestor stories is written by our member, Alan Mewett. Alan's blog Who they were: family history has an interesting collection of stories of England, Immigration, South Australia and other topics.  These are illustrated with wonderful photos from Alan's collection.

Seniors week: learn how to write a blog

The second in our NSW Seniors Week program is
Sharing your story in small bites: write a blog

Obviously you are interested in blogs if you are reading this.

Would you like to learn how easy it is to start your own?

Learn from one of Australia’s foremost bloggers, Geniaus (aka Jill Ball), how you can use blogs to:
- preserve your stories,
- record your travels,
- share your recipes, or
- keep a journal.
Examples of different types of blogs will be provided.

It is on Wednesday 12 March from 10.30am to approximately 12.30pm.
It will be held in Gordon Library Meeting Room 1 - between our research rooms and the Gordon Library (799 Pacific Highway Gordon).

It is free to all but as morning tea is provided, please RSVP.
Phone our rooms on 9499 4568 (between the hours of 10am and 2pm please) or email us at khs@khs.org.au

Please see our Calendar tab for other Seniors week events.

Our First Blogiversary

In the blogging world we celebrate blogiversaries, the anniversaries of the day our first post was published. Today we have reached a milestone, our First Blogiversary.

In that first post we indicated that we would endeavour "to provide details about Society events and information and education resources for Society members and the community." Hopefully we have achieved this in some small measure.

According to Blogger statistics there have been 10,149 pageviews of our blog in its first year with 1,366 visits last month. Our target had been to have 1,000 pager views per month by the end of our first year and we have achieved that. Many of our visitors come from outside the Ku-ring-gai area with 32% of our visitors coming from the United States!

My co-blogger Jackie van Bergen and I are pleased with the results from our first year of blogging and look forward to continuing success in our second year. We hope that we have demonstrated that blogging is a useful communication channel for historical and genealogical societies.

Thank you to all those wonderful people who have supported and encouraged us in our blogging efforts.

New Badge on our Blog

We are proudly displaying a new badge on the right hand sidebar of our blog. We are pleased to report that we have been nominated in Inside History Magazine's list of "50 Genealogy Blogs you need to Read in 2013".

The list includes personal, institutional and commercial blogs that contain information relevant to those who indulge in family history research. Take a look at the list at  http://www.insidehistory.com.au/2013/07/50-genealogy-blogs-you-need-to-read/ to see what sort of company we are in.

This award will direct more readers to our blog so our Society will be highlighted to fellow researchers and groups both in Australia and overseas.

Thankyou Inside History Magazine.

Another member joins the blogisphere

As one who is passionate about the value of blogging for genealogy and history I am always excited to find a new Australian blog. I was doubly delighted when I discovered a new blog from a Society member, Ed.

In his blog, Carr Family Search, Ed has already written nine posts on a range of topics  including one post about his involvement with our World War 1 project. It is wonderful to read of the enthusiasm Ed has for this project.

I am sure you will enjoy reading Ed's posts. The URL for his blog is http://ecarr357.blogspot.com.au/

Praise for our Blog

In a recent blog post Sydney Blogger, Diane Hewson, who has been catching up on blog reading during the holidays wrote on her blog, Family stories: photographs and memories, "I thought it would be an opportunity to share with you some of the blogs that I have found amusing, informative and pretty!!!"

Diane listed as worth reading  fifteen blogs that are mostly Australian and mostly about history or genealogy. Included in this list was our Society blog.

Thank you Diane for the mention. We are pleased that you are enjoying our posts.

KHS - A Social Society

Irish Day Feast at KHS
The Ku-ring-gai Historical Society is a very social place where members enjoy meeting together in person for research and education.

As the Society recognises the value of Social Media in today's world it has taken the decision to embrace these new forms of  communication. The Society is pleased to announce that, from today, it will be using this blog and a new Facebook page to provide details about Society events and as information and education resources for Society members and the community.

We look forward to reaching out to both Society members and new contacts through this blog. We hope that  you will say hello by leaving comments on our blog posts and by liking our Facebook page.

If you you find yourself in Gordon, please call into our Society rooms and say hello in person.
