Seniors week talks

One of our Vice Presidents, Jo Harris has two talks as part of this year's NSW Seniors Week.

The first is titled Stories of Early Ku-ring-gai.

Jo will take you on a journey through the development of Ku-ring-gai, from Captain Arthur Phillip’s overland expedition, to the timber-getters, then the orchardists followed by early settlers and suburbs.

This talk is on Friday 14 March from 10.30am to approx 12.30pm
It will be held in Gordon Library Meeting Room 2 - on the other side of our research rooms from the Gordon Library (799 Pacific Highway Gordon).

For the second talk, Jo, leader of the family history group, will give a highly entertaining presentation on getting started with researching your family history.

This talk is on Monday 17 March from 10.30am to approx 12.30pm.
It will be held in Gordon Library Meeting Room 1 - between our research rooms and the Gordon Library (799 Pacific Highway Gordon).


Both talks are free to all but as morning tea is provided, please RSVP.

Men at work

Family History is often thought of as a female pursuit. This morning when I looked around at the people who were working on the Society computers I noted that they were mostly male. I dived into my handbag and took a couple of snaps of them beavering away. Most of the chaps were completing their homework assignments for the Family History Course that is being conducted at the Society by Jo Harris.

Reminder

The Society’s Annual General Meeting and Election of Officers will be held after the General Meeting on Saturday 17 August.

The Guest Speaker will be Jo Harris, Society Vice-President and Family History Group Leader, will  discuss the influential roles of Hughes, Marconi and Fisk in the development of early wireless transmissions.

Mystery Man

The guest speaker at tomorrow's Family History Group meeting at 2:00 pm is billed as a "Mystery Man" who will entertain us. Who is he? What is his story?

Members and visitors will need to attend  the meeting tomorrow in our rooms to seek an answer to this question.

At 11:00 am members and visitors are invited to a workshop which will focus on "Exploring intranet resources".  The Society has a large number of genealogy resources that are available in the rooms via the Society intranet.

The general format for activities on the first Saturday of the month (except January) is for there to be a workshop between 11:00 am and 1:00pm, a break for lunch when people can stay in the rooms for a chat, a cuppa and some lunch or wander down the street at Gordon to find some sustenance. At 2:00 pm there is a general meeting chaired by Family History Group leader, Jo Harris, followed by a guest speaker. Afternoon tea and drawing of the monthly raffle conclude the proceedings.
