Do you have European ancestors?

Come and look at a new resource on our intranet:
Emigrants from Hamburg to Australasia 1850 – 1879

This database provides an index to 40,857 passengers departing from Hamburg for ports in Australia and New Zealand between 1850 and 1879.

This is an important resource for family historians with an interest in migration from Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, Italy and other European countries through the port of
Hamburg. It was published by the Queensland Family History Society.

It provides information such as name, former place of residence, age, occupation, ship, destination ad departure years.

Les, one of our members has recently donated a German/English dictionary and this will be a great help to the German SIG and other researchers. Thanks Les.

Please note, there is no German Research Special Interest Group in March.
The next meeting will be on Monday 14 April at 1.30pm in the KHS Research Rooms and this new resource will be demonstrated then.

A busy week coming up!

Special Interest Groups have really taken off in our Society.
They have increased the numbers of members and non-members alike joining in Society activities and using the wonderful resources available in our research rooms. Friendships have been formed and brick walls broken down.

This week is particularly busy:
The Mac group usually meet on the first Monday of each month but as it is a public holiday this month have decided to join with the fledgling Technology group for a gadget day.
This meeting will be on Thursday 10 October at 1.30pm in the rooms.
Come along and see who has the most gadgets and all the amazing things ways they can help your research, or just be fun!

The Irish group meet on the second Fridays and are never short on topics and stories to share. There are always brick walls to chip away at and new resources to help.
This meeting will be on Friday 11 October at 1.30pm.

The German group meet on the second Mondays. They are always well attended and attendees are active in finding new websites, books and resources to further their research.
There meeting this month is on Monday 14 October at 1.30pm.

Soon there will be a New Zealand special interest group. If you are interest in this one, please email your details to kkhs@khs.org.au to be passed on to the co-ordinator.

Hope to see you at one of these meetings soon.

Convicts and Germans

Our next family history group meeting is being held this Saturday 6 April.

The morning session starts at 11am in our research rooms and will introduce some early convict records that are now available.

The afternoon meeting starts at 2pm in the meeting room (between Gordon Library and our Research Rooms) in the Old Gordon Public School on Pacific Highway Gordon.
The guest speaker, Allan Rost, is better known to our members as one of the regular contributors to our annual journal The Historian, and the 2012 KHS Historian of the Year.

Allan will talk about his German origins.
This photo is of Allan's mother's paternal grandparents, Carl and Justine Kleinschmidt from the Uckemark region of Brandenburg.

Visitors are welcome and afternoon tea is provided.

Also a reminder: the German research special interest group has its next meeting on Monday 8 April at 1.30pm in the research rooms.
