History in Five

Join us in Gordon Library Meeting Room 1
at 2 pm on Saturday 26 October 2024

On Saturday 26 October 2024, we hold our Annual General Meeting. Following the brief AGM will be our Members’ Forum, with this year’s topic being… "History in Five".

Our Members’ Forum is an opportunity to get to know other members and share historical interests!

Members who have already pre-registered to speak will share their interest in a historical topic, and it’s called History in Five because each talk is for a maximum of five minutes. There will be time for questions after each one.

Talks will include the Tulkiyan story from two former Friends of Tulkiyan:

Beverley Dunstan (Tour Guide) who will speak on the house, the family and the source of their wealth; and

Jocelyn Brennan-Horley (Convenor) who will speak on the work of the Friends of Tulkiyan from 2004 to 2012.

To commemorate 20 years since the formation of the Friends of Tulkiyan group, we will also be selling the remaining stock of good quality linen tea towels that were originally produced for sale at Tulkiyan house openings.

At only $10 each, and featuring artwork by botanical artist and KHS member Marion Farley, these would make an ideal Christmas gift!

Limited numbers will be on sale at our October and November meetings (stock permitting) – cash only, please.

September 2024 General Meeting - Saturday 28 September

Guest Speaker:
Kyra Geddes

Join us in Gordon Library Meeting Room 1
at 2 pm on Saturday 28 September 2024

The Story Thief

Ku-ring-gai Historical Society member Kyra Geddes has resided in Gordon for more than twelve years and, after many years of research and writing, published her debut novel, The Story Thief https://kyrageddes.com/the-story-thief-book in May 2024 - a historical fiction largely set in Gordon and its surrounds, during the period 1916 to 1946.

It was in reading Henry Lawson’s iconic 1892 story The Drover’s Wife that Kyra was struck by how the female characters were not deemed worthy of a name or title beyond their relation to the men in their lives. This injustice became the inspiration to write The Story Thief.

Part fiction, part fact, the story follows Lillian, who was born in 1892. When she reads The Drover’s Wife at school, she quickly becomes convinced that it is based on her own family’s story and is determined to prove it. We follow Lillian over the course of her life across monumental points in Australia’s history - including women’s suffrage, the two world wars and the birth of nuclear warfare - as she must decide what is more important: holding onto the past or embracing the future.

Kyra’s historical research shines throughout the novel, beautifully depicting the North Shore and featuring numerous real people and places, including local historic houses Eryldene and Carinya in Gordon; Killarney Castle (which was used during WWII for air raid drills); and Ravenswood (where the protagonist Lillian teaches).

Copies of The Story Thief will be available for purchase.

(Please note, Kyra replaces our previously advertised September speaker, Dr Richard White, who is unable to attend on this date.)

August 2024 General Meeting - Saturday 24 August

Guest Speaker:
Noel Phelan

Join us in Gordon Library Meeting Room 1
at 2 pm on Saturday 24 August 2024

The Catalina Story

As many of their operations were carried out in secrecy, the story of the humble Catalina flying boat – and its crucial place in our WWII history – is not well known.

These long range, multi-purpose aircraft could land almost anywhere, and were one of the mainstays in the Battle for Australia and the Pacific. It has been said that the PBY Catalinas were to Australia what the Spitfire was to Britain in the Battle for Britain.

Noel’s presentation will describe the history of the aircraft, and the many roles the Catalinas played in WWII, including air-sea rescue, convoy escort, supplying coast watchers and others (such as Z Force) behind enemy lines, as well as the strategic mine-laying operations by the Black Cats. And at the end of the war, Catalinas were involved in repatriating POWs from Japanese concentration camps.

Hear about the history and incredible feats of these versatile aircraft and the bravery of the men that flew them during the dark days of WWII.

About Noel Phelan

Noel has been a volunteer guide at the Maritime Museum for over 15 years, and is a volunteer at the Naval Historical Society where he has developed three Navy harbour cruises. He has also organised a speaker’s program for the Navy Historical Society. Noel recently fulfilled a boyhood dream to fly a WWII fighter, by flying a Spitfire at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford, UK.

BOOKINGS REQUIRED by Wednesday 21 August. RSVP to Judith Godden at secretary@khs.org.au

Have you ever walked past the historic Vanderfield building at Royal North Shore Hospital and wondered what was inside? Well, it’s time to satisfy that curiosity! Inside is a museum and an extensive, well-organised archive – and we can visit both!

Both places are treasure troves of local and hospital history. There is much to see: museum objects, photographs, biographical files… The honorary archivist, Dr Cate Storey OAM, and museum curator, Eileen Henderson, will kindly show our members and visitors around.

When? Thursday 29 August from 10am.

How long? Around 2½ to 3 hours, including morning tea, kindly provided by the Archive volunteers.

Cost? $20, cash only. The museum and archives are entirely reliant on volunteers and donations, so your $20 will support their work, and cover the cost of morning tea. Please bring the $20 cash on the day, to be collected before we enter the building.

Meet? Outside the Vanderfield building, Reserve Road, Royal North Shore Hospital (or on the verandah if it’s raining).

Getting there: It’s an easy 5-minute stroll from St Leonards station. Once through the turnstiles, turn right and use the pedestrian overpass which goes over Herbert Street. Follow the path to Reserve Road, then turn right onto Reserve Road, heading towards the main part of the hospital. The Vanderfield Building will be on your right.

Drive to one of the Hospital’s carparks within an easy walk to the Vanderfield building. See www.nslhd.health.nsw.gov.au/CYFH/HealthTopics/Documents/RNSH-Visitor-Parking-Map.pdf

July 2024 General Meeting - Saturday 20 July

Guest Speaker:
Dick Whitaker

Join us in Gordon Library Meeting Room 1
at 2 pm on Saturday 20 July 2024

Note: this meeting is on the third Saturday of the month - but after this, the rest of our General Meetings for 2024 will be on the fourth Saturday of the month.

A Sydney Wild Man – The Life and Times of John Norton, 1858 -1916

KHS member Dick Whitaker returns with the story of the tumultuous life and times of Truth newspaper owner John Norton – one Australia’s first ‘media populists’. He became both a politician and a media baron, accumulating tremendous wealth and power in the process.

Cyril Pearl’s 1958 book Wild Men of Sydney was about John Norton, Patrick Crick and William Wills – crooked politicians who were heavily involved in the NSW land scandals of the 1890s and 1900s. This talk looks at the life and times of one of these – John Norton – and his rise and fall within the background of Victorian and Edwardian Sydney.

In addition to his political activities, Norton achieved notoriety and tremendous wealth through his media ownership of Truth newspaper – a weekly scandal sheet with interstate offices.

His story is a tragedy that saw him become all-powerful as one of Australia’s first media populists, followed by his descent into alcoholism and the wreckage of his family.

In this look at the life and times of John Norton, amateur historian Dick Whitaker draws from several sources including Wild Men of Sydney, plus extensive use of the writings of Norton himself, and cartoons contained in Truth at the time.

Turning the Pages with C.E.W. Bean

Bean escorting the Queen and Duke at the opening of the War Memorial in 1954

KHS member Anne Carroll reflects on aspects of the civil life and works of her grandfather, Charles Bean, editor and writer of the official WWI histories, and champion of the Australian War Memorial.

Interspersed with personal recollections of Charles Bean, a former resident of Ku-ring-gai, Anne will talk about his formative influences, how those influences were reflected in his military and civic writings and works, in the institutions and organisations he championed, and in the collection of papers and records he left to Australia.

On display will be a selection of panels forming part of an exhibition entitled 'Charles Bean: Life and Work', held at the UNSW Canberra in 2016. The exhibition was mounted in conjunction with a forum entitled 'Charles Bean’s Legacy', to mark the centenary of Bean conceiving the idea of the Australian War Memorial. The curator of the exhibition, Professor Peter Stanley, described the overall exhibition as presenting aspects of Bean’s character and his contribution to national and historical interpretation. A selection of these same panels was on display in Gordon Library during the 2017 National Trust Heritage Festival under the banner of "Having a Voice: CEW Bean as a 'Social Missionary' (2017)".

About Anne Carroll, OAM

Anne is the granddaughter of Charles Bean. She knew her grandfather well, and has taken an active interest in his life and work. In September 2023 Anne was invited to deliver the third C.E.W. Bean Memorial Lecture at Tuggeranong Homestead in Canberra, where the writing of the Official History of World War I was commenced.

Anne has served in various voluntary positions including with the Girl Guides Association of NSW and local sporting groups, and she also co-founded and became the president of FOKE (Friends of Ku-ring-gai Environment) – a position she held for 18 years. In 2003 Anne was awarded the Centenary Medal and the Medal of the Order of Australia.

Guest Speaker:
Ross McMullin

Join us in Gordon Library Meeting Room 1
at 2 pm on Saturday 20 April 2024

when Ross McMullin presents...
Life So Full of Promise

Ross McMullin is an award-winning historian and biographer, an acclaimed storyteller, and an entertaining speaker. His multi-biography Farewell, Dear People was awarded the Prime Minister’s Prize for Australian History, and in his new sequel, Life So Full of Promise: further biographies of Australia’s lost generation, Ross has again combined prodigious research and narrative flair in a collection of interwoven family stories about forgotten Australians who had radiant potential.

The rich cast of characters includes a popular doctor from Wahroonga, a brilliant cricketer (Ross played first-grade District cricket in Melbourne), and an exceptionally talented barrister who was a potential prime minister.

With their families and friends also conspicuous in the narratives, Life So Full of Promise is a revealing window into this defining era for Australia. It illuminates what the war was like at home and at the sharp end. Life So Full of Promise emulates Farewell, Dear People in providing insights into the experiences of Australians before, during and after the war, whether they were combatants or civilians, or soldiers’ wives or parents. You’ll be enlightened, entertained and moved as Ross brings these extraordinary yet unknown Australians back to life.

Life So Full of Promise has been shortlisted for the Mark & Evette Moran Nib Literary Award. It will be available at the event, together with other books, all at discount prices: see https://rossmcmullin.com.au for further information.

60th Anniversary Dinner photos

We ended last year on a high with the great success of our 60th Anniversary Dinner on 21st November.

The preparations went smoothly for the celebratory event which was held at the St Ives Club, a fantastic venue. Thanks to Annet and Kevin Latham, as well as chef Nick Williams from Pinnacle Catering, the evening was very much enjoyed by all those in attendance.

A great feature of the night was images from the 60s era, sourced and compiled by our Secretary, Judith Godden, and displayed on the screens around the room.

As a special gift, all guests were thrilled to receive a complimentary copy of our latest publication, ‘Ku-ring-gai – a peep at our past’, a historical compilation of glossy images. If you were not able to attend the dinner, this beautifully presented book is now available from the Society for just $15 at https://khs.org.au/large-books/

Jill Nicholson’s and Sue Moore’s photography captured some special memories of the evening for our archives, a selection of which appear here.
